To Our Beloved Marigold Parade Community Members,
The South Valley Muertos y Marigolds Parade and Celebration will not be held in 2019. Since the last parade in 2018, it has become apparent that our event has grown at a rate that we could not have anticipated. Considering the overall attendance at the last event, estimated at up to 17,000, as well as concerns from both the community-at-large and County officials, the Muertos y Marigolds Organizing Committee has had to take a step back to address the issues and rededicate our efforts to the Committee's mission.
Moving forward we will restructure the event in a way that upholds our mission. The Committee's most important purpose is to promote non-corporate, grassroots activities rooted in art, culture and political satire.
Communities in Albuquerque and South Valley, in particular, face immense challenges. These emerging issues include cultural appropriation & gentrification - the processes through which people move into our community and take over its culture, housing, and other economic assets - to the detriment of the people who have lived here for generations.
